What compression actually leaves behind

JPEG throws away detail in 8×8 pixel blocks, and it throws away more in the areas your eye attends to least. That is a good trade at full size and a bad one the moment you enlarge, because the enlargement has no idea which structure came from the camera and which came from the encoder.

Two artefacts matter:

  • Blocking. Flat regions — sky, a studio backdrop, a wall — break into faintly visible squares. Enlarged 4×, those squares become 32-pixel tiles.
  • Ringing. High-contrast edges get a faint echo on either side. Enlarged, the echo becomes a visible halo, and it survives sharpening because the sharpener reads it as real edge structure.

Both are worst in JPEGs that have been re-saved repeatedly — anything that has been through a chat app, a marketplace resize, or an email round trip.

Judge the source before you pick a mode

Open the file at 100% and look at a flat area and a hard edge.

  • Blocking or halos visible → the file is damaged. Run Unblur & Restore first. Its restoration pass is built for this, and it will enlarge 2× in the same run.
  • Clean but soft → no damage to repair, just a lens or a small original. Go straight to Ultra Upscale 8X at 4× or 8×.

Getting this order right is most of the outcome. Enlarging a damaged JPEG makes the damage structural; cleaning after enlargement means the cleaner is working on artefacts four times bigger than the ones it was tuned for.

Pro tips

  • Find the original. A 2 MB JPEG straight from the camera beats a 200 KB copy of the same shot, however good the upscaler. The reconstruction can only work from what survived.
  • Never round-trip. Do not export the result back to JPEG at 80% quality and call it done — that adds a fresh generation of the damage you just paid to remove.
  • Screenshots of JPEGs are the worst case. Recompressing a compressed image on a scaled display gives the model two incompatible sets of artefacts to reason about.

Why does my JPEG look worse after enlarging elsewhere?

Because the artefacts were enlarged too. A generic upscaler cannot tell an 8x8 compression block from real image structure, so it reconstructs both faithfully.

Do I get a JPEG back?

No — output is PNG. Re-encoding a freshly reconstructed image as JPEG would add a second generation of exactly the damage you came here to remove. Convert afterwards if you need to.

How big a JPEG can I upload?

Can I do both passes?
