Why AI renders break at print size

Diffusion models generate at a fixed latent resolution. Whatever the interface shows you, the underlying render is usually somewhere between one and two megapixels — enough for a screen, roughly a 5×7 inch print at 300 DPI, and nowhere near a poster.

The tempting fix is to run the generator's own "upscale" button repeatedly. That works up to a point and then starts compounding its own artefacts: each pass treats the previous pass's invented detail as ground truth, and by the third one the brushwork has developed a repeating texture that reads as machine-made from across the room.

The second problem is that renders are not photographs. A photograph has a real optical structure to reconstruct. A render has style — brush direction, paper grain, the specific way an illustrator's line thickens on a curve. An upscaler that reconstructs faithfully will enlarge the style faithfully, including its softness. One that reinvents can extend the style, which is usually what you want.

Step-by-step workflow

1. Export at the generator's maximum first. Every pixel you start with is one the upscaler does not have to invent. Use the highest native output your tool offers before exporting.
2. Match the mode to the artwork. Illustrative, painterly and graphic work goes to Creative Upscale. Photorealistic renders go to Ultra Upscale 8X, which reconstructs rather than reinterprets.
3. For Creative Upscale, set scale 4× and creativity 50%. Illustration tolerates — and usually benefits from — more invention than a photograph does. Keep resemblance around 50-60 so the composition holds.
4. Steer with style tags. The advanced prompt field accepts style tags. "oil painting", "clean vector edges" and "fine ink linework" all change what the model adds in the new detail. Quality tags are appended automatically, so you only need the descriptive ones.

Choosing your scale by print size

Work back from where the piece will hang, not from a number.

• Framed print, viewed close: 300 DPI. A 4× pass on a 1024px render gives roughly 13 inches on the long edge.
• Canvas, viewed from a metre: 150 DPI is plenty. The same 4× file comfortably covers 27 inches.
• Wallpaper or a wall mural: 100-120 DPI, because nobody inspects a wall at arm's length. This is where Ultra Upscale 8X earns its place — 8× from a 1024px render is 8192px, over six feet at 120 DPI.

Pro tips

• Fix composition before resolution. Anatomy, extra fingers and text that says nothing are composition problems. Enlarging makes them bigger, not better.
• One pass, not three. A single 4× pass beats two 2× passes, because the second pass in a chain is reconstructing the first pass's guesses.
• Lower creativity for anything with type. Lettering is the first thing invention destroys. If the piece has a title in it, drop creativity toward 35% or add the type afterwards in a layout tool.
• Keep the seed and prompt. If a 4× result goes somewhere you dislike, regenerating at a better base is often cheaper than fighting the upscale.
